In the Beginning

Summer's end triggers many changes: schools start, days shorten, temperatures begin their slow decline.  For me, the end of summer marks a new beginning, the start of a trip across the country, from New York to California, from old life to new.  And what better way for an environmentalist with an agriculture background to get from coast to coast than by trading labor for food and lodging on organic farms along the way?

This country is vast, and can be seen as divided in many ways - religiously, politically, regionally - but we all have at least one thing in common: we need food to survive. From Connecticut to Kansas City, Asheville to Albany, farms criss-cross this country in a diversity of shapes, sizes, and ideologies. Its my hope to see as many of them as possible, to see how we feed ourselves, as a whole country, as individual communities, as people. It's going to be a 2 month, 3,000 mile journey through other people's harvests.
